Nerd Happiness… Check!

If you refer back to a few postings ago you read about my frustration with finding a high-end consumer router. I had the Netgear WNDR37AV which, although has a lot of potential, had poor performance and reliability. I reluctantly returned it. I felt lost in finding a truly quality product. I decided to bite the bullet and purchase the Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station. What can I say? Easy and awesome! Solid setup experience. My wireless setup is now complete again — this time finally for good. I’m so satisfied with the AEBS. I’ve got all nine seasons of The X-Files back on the now-formatted HFS+ external hard drive connected to the router as well as all the seasons of Trailer Park Boys. This process of wireless network upgrading is finally complete. Nerd happiness… Check!

Hey There!

Yikes! It ‘s been awhile. Here’s what’s up:

  • Things have been busy and mellow at the same time. It’s confusing. Anyway, my teeth of great wisdom were taken out end of August. It was a challenging recovery full of moodiness, fatigue, frustration, and — oh yeah — a trip to the emergency room with a mouth infection. Great, huh? So… Once the prescribed Penicillin took hold in my system, recovery seemed to double and my green/grey furry, shag carpet-like tongue was nice and fleshy again. I’m back to normal , however I was unable to exercise for a couple weeks and now it is just so difficult getting back into the swing of things. Such work.
  • The family and I have one last outing coming up before I return back to school. As always, it’s a bit bittersweet. But, I’ve gotta admit I’m very much looking forward to my studio and the upcoming (but challenging) school year.
  • I got an iPhone 4 a few weeks ago. However, for some reason I am having battery issues and my battery runs down very quickly. It’s a bit troubling but I hope Apple will take care of me when I bring them my issue.
  • Again, I’m really excited for the school year. Unlike my usual self, I now look outside and it’s much darker earlier and it’s raining and dreary — but I really like it. I think about being at the Madison Street Starbucks in Corvallis — staying warm and cozy with my iPad, book, homework, and music. I daydream about my studio and getting comfy and having a movie or sports on TV as the rain falls heavy outside. I even enjoy the idea of running in the rain and giving no care to how soaked my clothes and gushing shoes get. Well… Okay maybe I’ll take my workout to the gym instead. But I want to do much more this year than last year. So far, my sophomore year was better than my freshman year — now let’s make it so that my junior year continues the succeeding pattern. I think it’s possible now that I have even more friends than before. I can see this being a great, great year with many opportunities. Plus, I am determined on a major and am ready to go gun-ho on achieving my goals. Like I’ve said before… Bring it on!
  • Anyhow… I think this sums up most of it. I need to get my body back in gear for my running class I have this upcoming term. I need to make sure I’m at the top of my game and not a straggler.
  • I need an internship too! Oh jeez now I’m getting overwhelmed. I think I have to have four internship credits to graduate — whatever it is, it equates to about four terms of being an intern. I need to get my guns firing right now! Aye… I feel so behind.
  • So, y’all… That’s it for now. Hope your summer is wrapping up well… And I hope you’re just as ready as I am for another awesome year in the 541!

Take a Bite

Tomorrow is another big day in the tech world. It’s like all the technology junkies hold their breath from now until the event is over tomorrow morning. I will certainly be following the live-blogging on Engadget – I’m so excited to see how I can spend all my money that I don’t really have to use! Still, it will be great to see what Cupertino has been working on… Plus iPhone OS 4.0? Sock’it to me!

Oahu ’09: Suntan and Splendor

September 4th, 2009 – September 8th, 2009

Today and the prior four days have been pretty nice. Sun, sand, and the splendor of warm ocean waters leaves an almost therapudic resonance in my mind. A waltz through the botanical gardens offered a bonding with the true nature of Hawai’i, yet while the achieved sunburn stings to the touch, at equal times it is almost delighting. Hence, do not heed this as a cue of masochism, but rather a common “no pain, no gain” phenomenon. The burn is like a trophy of coastal lounging and paradisal escape – similar to sending off a postcard in the mail. Frankly, it is superb to see the redness form into a golden tan – something I haven’t had in years.

Thus far, we have encountered one day of sub-par weather. Despite inaccurate, computer-generated forecastings, it has been very warm, less humid, and overall sunny and comfortable since then. We spent yesterday morning at Pearl Harbor where we visited the U.S.S. Arizona memorial. It was amazing to see drops of oil continue to constantly surface upon the ocean waters since the sinking of the battleship 67 years ago. It is almost eerie…

Completing our viewing of the memorial, the family and I set forth towards urban powerhouse and tropical paradise Waikiki. Finding public parking is not only a nightmare, but also expensive as well. Thereafter, we enjoyed the priciest lunch ever at The Grand Hawaiian. Seriously… A $19 “Big Island Cobb Salad”!… At least it was healthy. But it was still amazing. We were seated in shade directly next to the powder-like white sand beach with an impecable view of the breathtakingly clear and aqua-tinted ocean, with the bonus of infinite people-watching.

So, we finally found ourselves some real estate on the beach, rolled out our towels, buttered up in suntan lotion, and eased into the treasured waters of Waikiki with an emotional ecstasy. It was epic, and all that was missing was a Corona. The soft, sandy bottom was very shallow and extended outwards a good distance, allowing the hundreds of suim-suited bodies to bathe without the crowd. After much relished suntanning, we changed into dry clothes and hit the streets of this thriving city. The main tourist and hotel-row area reminded me of the Las Vegas Strip, sans the horrid dinginess, dirty prostitution, and suspicious pick-pocketers. It was golden. We decided to stride through the International Marketplace, where we cruised around looking at all the different things we could buy. We also saw the Apple Store of Waikiki, the largest Apple location I have seen so far. I can’t imagine how they could have enough stuff to fill that place. The standard stores, for example Brigeport Village, already seem too large in size. It was like putting everything that location has to sell into a place three times as big. Pointless?

Anyway… Am enjoying it all, although I am very excited to getting back to 24 Hour Fitness next week, and then moving into the new apartment in Corvallis thereafter.

Corona = 4
Mojito = 1
Bud Lite w/ Lime = 1

Initial Thoughts: iPhone 3G S (Updated)

iPhone 3G S

iPhone 3G S

Whoopie… I can’t wait for next year when the next iPhone is out and my contract is due. Today’s new iPhone 3G S is nice, but nothing was presented that is mind blowing new –  I mean everything seen today should have technically already been there. It’s almost as if iPhone 3G S is more of a “catch-up-to-the-crowd” release than a “breakthrough” device. One more year… 2009 is the year to get everything set to standard (i.e. video record, voice control, etc.). 2010, however, should break new ground for the iPhone lineup. Bring it on!

(UPDATE) … So here’s my prediction for changes in the 2010 iPhone. This is completely my imagination and best logistical thoughts.

  • New external design
    • Thinner
    • Less weight
    • New production materials
  • Faster data
  • Less bluetooth restrictions
  • Umm… Google Latitude, anyone?!
  • Improved camera
    • Higher resolution
    • LED flashlight
    • Liquid-Optical zoom
    • HD video recording
    • Possible forward-facing, under-glass camera
  • Support for Flash

Also, I am really looking forward to Hulu making a scene on the iPhone. It’s coming, but all I can do until then is wait. Hrmm… Technology can be so amazing, but it’s almost like a drug. You get so addicted to it’s awesomeness that you keep on craving more!

MacBooks… Yum!

I am feeling obsessed with Apple’s new refresh of the MacBook. It finally brings the Pro love to the younger sibling. I’ve been really juggling the thoughts about this jewel because, now that I am using my Dell XPS M1530 full-time in and out of class, I am recognizing the moderate inconvenience of “having it all”.

Late summer 2008, I decided to get the 1530 absolutely loaded. I got a great deal online with a 25% e-coupon, which frankly, made me very happy with my purchase. However, now that I’ve had all this time with all its possibilities, such as gaming, watching TV with the tuner I bought, and just having the implementation of a full HD screen, it feels all too monotonous now, and the freshness and originality of a MacBook or MacBook Pro seems so welcomed. I am enthralled with the MacBook itself because of its portability. Like I mentioned earlier, the M1530 I have is a 15-incher, the common size for notebook consumers to purchase. Unlike the Mac’s, the Dell is sloped-like on the bottom, such that it doesn’t lay flad when on a small, portioned surface like an auditorium’s armrest. The MacBook only jumps down ~2 inches in screen size, but it does bog down in other areas. My fear is that, in some Godly way, if I was to acquire a MacBook, I’d miss the superiority of the M1530. However, if I have this love for the MacBook and I crave to have it, obviously the pro’s are outweighing the con’s, no? In any way, I think it would be awesome to have and would really feel better in college. Am I regretting my notebook purchase decision? Not really. Do I wish the new MacBook would have been revealed mid-summer? YOU BET!
