Hey There!

Yikes! It ‘s been awhile. Here’s what’s up:

  • Things have been busy and mellow at the same time. It’s confusing. Anyway, my teeth of great wisdom were taken out end of August. It was a challenging recovery full of moodiness, fatigue, frustration, and — oh yeah — a trip to the emergency room with a mouth infection. Great, huh? So… Once the prescribed Penicillin took hold in my system, recovery seemed to double and my green/grey furry, shag carpet-like tongue was nice and fleshy again. I’m back to normal , however I was unable to exercise for a couple weeks and now it is just so difficult getting back into the swing of things. Such work.
  • The family and I have one last outing coming up before I return back to school. As always, it’s a bit bittersweet. But, I’ve gotta admit I’m very much looking forward to my studio and the upcoming (but challenging) school year.
  • I got an iPhone 4 a few weeks ago. However, for some reason I am having battery issues and my battery runs down very quickly. It’s a bit troubling but I hope Apple will take care of me when I bring them my issue.
  • Again, I’m really excited for the school year. Unlike my usual self, I now look outside and it’s much darker earlier and it’s raining and dreary — but I really like it. I think about being at the Madison Street Starbucks in Corvallis — staying warm and cozy with my iPad, book, homework, and music. I daydream about my studio and getting comfy and having a movie or sports on TV as the rain falls heavy outside. I even enjoy the idea of running in the rain and giving no care to how soaked my clothes and gushing shoes get. Well… Okay maybe I’ll take my workout to the gym instead. But I want to do much more this year than last year. So far, my sophomore year was better than my freshman year — now let’s make it so that my junior year continues the succeeding pattern. I think it’s possible now that I have even more friends than before. I can see this being a great, great year with many opportunities. Plus, I am determined on a major and am ready to go gun-ho on achieving my goals. Like I’ve said before… Bring it on!
  • Anyhow… I think this sums up most of it. I need to get my body back in gear for my running class I have this upcoming term. I need to make sure I’m at the top of my game and not a straggler.
  • I need an internship too! Oh jeez now I’m getting overwhelmed. I think I have to have four internship credits to graduate — whatever it is, it equates to about four terms of being an intern. I need to get my guns firing right now! Aye… I feel so behind.
  • So, y’all… That’s it for now. Hope your summer is wrapping up well… And I hope you’re just as ready as I am for another awesome year in the 541!

Wishlist: Mobile Data

You know what I want more than an iPad, next generation iPhone, a vacation, or six-pack abs (okay, well not more than that)? I really want to cellular data for my notebooks.

In September 2009, my parents and I traveled to Oahu, Hawaii (cue these posts). Just prior to the trip, a non-jailbreak hack was available for my iPhone that allowed internet tethering – and boy do I sure miss it now. When we arrived at our rented condominium in Hauula (non-touristy area), I discovered that there were absolutely no hotspots around. Initial panic, right? However, all I had to do was connect my iPhone to my Dell Mini 9 – and voila!… Les Internets! It was a very, very nice feature to have. I took my netbook out to the picnic bench alongside the beach – though I had no reason to be actually using a computer while on vacation. It was all just for the capability factor. Internet… Everywhere!

And so now, here I am craving it again. I really want to go lay in the park with my netbook and maybe do some reading or writing – but the internets do not dwell there. This isn’t the only time my need for cellular data with my notebook(s) has existed. I think about the road trips I go on from time-to-time with the family – sitting in the back seat, nothing to do. Chances are I’m tooling around on my iPhone because that’s the only thing that’s got internet.

But, I also feel bad about “needing” wireless cell data capabilities. Should I really be that connected to the internet all the time? Is it really necessary? I’m no business man – I don’t need to check/reply to emails every hour. I’m just a kid living a casual life as a student. Maybe in the future…

Take a Bite

Tomorrow is another big day in the tech world. It’s like all the technology junkies hold their breath from now until the event is over tomorrow morning. I will certainly be following the live-blogging on Engadget – I’m so excited to see how I can spend all my money that I don’t really have to use! Still, it will be great to see what Cupertino has been working on… Plus iPhone OS 4.0? Sock’it to me!

F5: jBlog… Good to Go!

Hey there,

jBlog has just taken another step in technology! Prior to July 1st, 2009, only self-hosted WordPress.org blogs could wield the power of the iPhone mobile blogging application created by WordPress. Now the newest version has been released, and it opens the door for regular WordPress.com blog authors (like me). This is a great day!

What can you expect from jBlog from this day forward?… More updates, faster information, on-the-spot postings, and photo uploads – all directly from my iPhone. I look forward to this opportunity to cover the horizons while being away from my computer. Keep on reading… We’ve reached the 1000 mark (kudos Lander), and there’s a lot more to come.

Plus, I hope you enjoy the July blog header. New font, new backdrop… Better than ever!

Bowsers of Browsers: Safari vs. Chrome

Battle of the B(r)owsers

Battle of the B(r)owsers (original graphic)

Much of the hype from WWDC 2009 revolved around iPhone 3G S and Macbook Pro. One aspect of the conference that seemed to fly under the radar of popularity is the release of Safari 4.0 for Mac and Windows. The last time I gave Safari a try to be my default browser, it was going up against my long-time use of Firefox 2.x. As I remember, Safari lost the match. As of today, some time has passed and Google’s Chrome browser has overthrown my love for Firefox. This is the new standard Safari has to live up to in my opinion, anyway.

When I initially launched Safari 4.0, it took a little time to start up – but that’s to be expected. From there on afterwards though, Safari had pretty similar startup rates to Chrome. In fact, the appearance of the Safari browser is so close to that of Chrome. Although I am not all too sure, I think Chrome copied Safari rather than vice versa.

Safari goods when contrasted with Chrome:

  • Equally snappy webpage loading
  • RSS
  • SnapBack
  • Top Sites grid-style graphic interface
    • Very sleek and smooth
    • Notifies you if one of your top sites has updated with new content since you last visited
  • Smooth transitions
  • More to come…

Safari bads when contrasted with Chrome

  • Address bar doesn’t forward to search engine
    • In other words, when you enter search terms in the address bar, it assumes you are searching for an exact domain, thus you receive a “server not found” error
  • No tab button
  • Opening a new tab shifts position of your webpage up or down
  • Loading webpages lag out more than they do in Chrome

Final Thoughts

Safari is pretty neat – it has some fundamental features that are absent in Chrome. However, it’ll take more from Apple to make Safari stand out from the crowd. At this time, it seems that they are just meeting benchmarks, rather than exceling beyond standards.
